Why does muscle oxygenation increase instead of decrease?

An unexpected increase in SmO₂ may be caused by an unstable reference, placing the sensor too high on the muscle, or the sensor shifting during exercise.

If SmO₂ increases instead of decreasing as exercise intensity rises, first check how the reference was performed and whether the sensor is positioned correctly.

1. Check the reference stability

Check whether the values changed by more than 5% during the 30-second reference. Larger changes may indicate that the muscle had not yet reached a stable resting state.

2. Check the sensor placement

Make sure the sensor is not placed too high on the muscle. Use the recommended measurement location and try to place it in the same position for every workout.

3. Check that the sensor hasn't moved

Sprawdź, czy w trakcie wysiłku sensor nie przesunął się w górę mięśnia. Stabilne mocowanie ogranicza ryzyko zaburzenia pomiaru.

4. Try an alternative placement

If the issue persists despite correct placement, try one of the alternative sensor positions described in the article on proper sensor placement: the middle portion of the quadriceps or, during steep uphill running, the central part of the hamstring (biceps femoris).

If the issue occurs repeatedly
